Pins on a Map

I don’t know if anyone else likes to read about travelling, but I definitely do. I love reading fiction that takes places in places I have been or places I would like to visit. I also enjoy reading books about people’s actual travels. I bought Pins on a Map by David Boesch for my husband one Christmas and ended up reading it myself.

The book is about a family who took a year off and travelled the world (for about 345 days). They arranged for their children to be taken out of school for the year, as long as they did their work while travelling. Obviously, their parents were able to make a case for the trip being educational, which helped to make this possible. With their three kids, they visited 6 continents and 17 countries. The story begins with how they chose the locations they visited and what factors they used to determine them (safety, best locations to travel with children, etc.) and how they planned their trip. Then, the reader gets to hear about the actual travels and the experiences they had while travelling. The family visited several places in the US, but also ventured to Europe, Asia, South America, Australia, and Africa. Some of these locations are on our list of places we’d like to visit, so it was really interesting getting to read about how one family chose to visit them.

The author of the book isn’t necessarily a seasoned writer (he is actually a physician), but that makes for a true account of a family’s travels. After reading it, it makes you want to take a year off yourself and travel the world. My husband said he thought this little paperback book was probably going to end up costing him a fortune because of all the crazy ideas it put into my head!

Of course, it got me thinking….where would I go if I could travel the world for a year? I have a feeling I would have a hard time cutting down the list, but there would definitely be time spent in Europe, South America, Central America, Africa, Australia, and parts of Asia. Someday (in my free time), I just might sit down and figure out how it would all work out…

What would be on your list for a year-long trip?
